StationKeeper Whale Alert System

2-3 pm (refreshments at 1:30 pm)
Biddeford Campus (Campus Center Multi-purpose room)
Moses Calouro

What if a single piece of information, delivered at the right moment, could prevent the loss of one of the world's most endangered marine mammals?

Moses Calouro, CEO of Maritime Information Systems (MotionInfo) will share how a real-world system was built and deployed to help protect marine life by improving how vessels receive and act on information at sea. It traces the journey from recognizing a critical awareness gap to developing StationKeeper, a tool that delivers real-time alerts to mariners operating in sensitive areas, including habitats of the North Atlantic right whale, a species still fighting for survival but showing signs of hope.

Along the way, it highlights how data, real-world constraints, and collaboration across industry, research, and policy shaped the system, and what it takes to turn an idea into something people actually use. At its core, this is a story about how better awareness can drive real change, and how the next generation can be part of building solutions that protect both people and the environment.
